AUGUSTA, GA — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (2-2) 10-1 win over Maine (1-4) on Friday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
What happened?
The Tigers scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead before the Black Bears answered with an unearned run in the top of the third inning. Clemson quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame and would go on to put up three more two-run innings to break open the game.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Maine scored a run in the top of the inning to cut the Tiger lead to 2-1, Clemson quickly responded with two runs to end any Black Bear momentum. Andrew Cox and Eli White started the rally with back-to-back one out singles and after a groundout advanced the runners, Reed Rohlman hit a ball up the middle to plate both runs and get the offense going for the rest of the game.
What went right?
Matthew Crownover had another solid outing, going 7.0 innings while allowing a single unearned run on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Unlike last Friday, the offense backed him up as nine different players recorded a hit. Clemson ended with 14 hits, paced by Rohlman and White who were both 3-for-5 at the plate with a combined five RBI. The Tigers were able to get going on the bases as well as five different players each recorded a stolen base.
What went wrong?
With a late change in game location, having to leave campus before 7:00AM to drive to the game, and the early start there were plenty of reasons Clemson could have not been at their best. Instead the Tigers put together their best game of the season and the only complaint of the day (outside of the chilly temperatures) could have been a slow start, but three straight two-run innings erased those doubts.
