The Tigers hit the practice fields on Monday for spring practice hoping to build on another strong season that ended with a victory over South Carolina and a blowout of Oklahoma in the Russell Athletic Bowl.
There are plenty of questions heading into spring practice. TCI takes a look at four question that should be answered over the next six weeks.
1 – Who’s No. 2?
With Deshaun Watson watching from the sidelines freshmen Tucker Israel and Kelly Bryant will get an opportunity to show what they can do. One of the quarterbacks will redshirt this season and one will play as a backup.
There will be plenty of reps for both this spring. They will get a chance to show how they perform with the ones. The staff would like to have that decision before summer so they can maximize the preparations for the backup in August camp, but that will all depend on if one of the players separates this spring.
2 – How quick can freshmen OL help?
The Tigers signed what is considered by some the top offensive line class for 2015. Mitch Hyatt, Jake Fruhmorgen, Noah Green and Zach Giella are all already enrolled and will get a jump start this spring.
With Jay Guillermo not on the team this spring, the staff will be searching for backups at center and guard. They will also be trying to determine which freshmen will be ready to provide some depth at tackle.
Offensive line is a difficult position for a true freshmen to come in and make a significant impact, but Clemson has four that come in with high expectations. The spring will help decide which are ready to play this season and which are likely headed towards a redshirt.
3 – Who will make two-deep at DE?
No position has more questions heading into next season than defensive end with three of the top four on the depth chart heading to the NFL. Shaq Lawson will start at one end, but the rest of the two-deep will be decided this spring and in August. Coach Swinney said Friday he expects Kevin Dodd to be playing on Sunday’s in the future.
Going into the spring Dodd and Lawson will be the starters.
Two freshmen are on campus and will get a shot to show if they can provided immediate help. Albert Huggins will likely start out at defensive end and could make a push for significant playing time. Sterling Johnson will also get a shot to battle for depth at DE. Both could end up inside at some point in the future, but with the depth questions at defensive end they could be part of the answer this season.
4- Can Gallman hold off Dye?
Wayne Gallman surprised many by earning the starting running back position last season. Injuries to Adam Choice, Zac Brooks and Tyshon Dye provided the opportunity and Gallman seized it with solid play. Zac Brooks will be back this spring, but the biggest question will be the improvement of Tyshon Dye.
Dye finally saw the field late last season, but played with some extra weight. Dye has the ability to be a difference maker in the backfield for the Tigers. Will he play well enough to take the starting role this spring or will Wayne Gallman continue to be “the guy” heading into the summer. It should be a fun battle.
