Nine former student-athletes and a coach comprise Clemson’s Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2015, which is headlined by former NFL linebacker Ed McDaniel and former basketball star Billy Williams.
Induction weekend is scheduled for Oct. 9-10, with the inductees being honored at the Clemson-Georgia Tech football game on Oct. 10.
McDaniel played football for the Tigers from 1988-’91 and earned first-team All-American honors in 1991. A fifth-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 1992, McDaniel enjoyed a 10-year NFL career with the Vikings. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1998.
At Clemson, McDaniel was the starting middle linebacker on the Tigers’ 1990 defense which led the nation is total yards allowed. He also started in 1991, as he helped guide the Tigers to an ACC Championship that season.
During his time at Clemson, the Tigers went 39-8-1, won two ACC Championships and three bowl games. McDaniel had 389 career tackles and 30 tackles for loss, while starting 38 of the 48 games he played in.
Williams, who played at Clemson from 1977-’80, was an All-American his senior year and led the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight in 1980. He was a first-team All-ACC selection as well. He averaged over 20 points per game his senior year in ACC play, best in the conference that year. He had nine 20-point games in 14 league contests that season and shot 53.5 percent from the field in 1980, fourth best percentage by a guard in Clemson history.
The former guard is first in school history in career field goal percentage by a Clemson guard and was a second-round pick of the Houston Rockets in the 1980 NBA Draft.
Joining McDaniel and Williams as this year’s inductees are Nancy Augustyniak (Women’s Soccer), Jay Berger (Men’s Tennis), Duane Bruley (Head Men’s Tennis Coach), Danny Ellis (Men’s Golf), Linda Rutter (Women’s Swimming), Tim Teufel (Baseball), Pearse Tormey (Men’s Soccer) and Cheron Wells (Women’s Basketball).
