A mid-December Signing Day?

It appears an early signing day period in college football is one step closer to coming true.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney told ESPN.com on Monday he believed the Atlantic Coast Conference coaches would vote in favor of a proposed December date.

Swinney and the rest of the ACC’s coaches are in Amelia Island, Fla., this week as part of the conference’s spring meetings. Last year, the ACC voted in favor of an early signing date in August.

“I would have loved to have seen the August date, but I’m happy with any early signing date,” Swinney said to ESPN.

Last June, the Conference Commissioners Association formed a committee to look into the possibility of seeing if an early signing period could be pulled off. The past January, during the American Football Coaches Association convention in Louisville, the committee proposed a mid-December early signing period which could coincide with the mid-year junior college transfers signing date that occurs in the third week of December.

“Based on all of the feedback — and there are all kinds of dates out there of what people want — the most favorable option the committee has seen seems to be for an early signing day in December, something that’s in line with the midyear junior college transfer signing date,” said Susan Peal, Director of National Letter of Intent back in January.

Peal says the reason for the mid-December date is the most favorable is because it is more in line with the coaches’ recruiting calendar and it would have the most minimal impact.

According to ESPN’s Andrea Adelson, the Conference Commissioners Association is set to vote on the proposal in June after getting feedback one last time from all coaches at their various spring meetings. If the proposal passes, it could be in place for 2016.

Swinney and most of the other ACC coaches preferred August over December because it takes the pressure off the signees and allows them to concentrate on their final season with their high school team. Last year, Clemson had 19 players committed to the 2015 Class before August 1 and all 19 signed with the Tigers in February.

“I disagree with some of the reasons (of a December signing period) but the working group felt like you’d have to change the recruiting calendar and there were a lot of other issues,” Swinney said. ”They had a lot of reasons. If December is the date, I’m happy with anything. Any early signing period is going to be beneficial to college football.”

Also considered in the December signing period was the fact there are so many coaching changes in December each year and having a signing day in August might cause more of a headache when it comes to players wanting to opt out of their decision should the school they signed with lose its head coach or position coach.

The football coaches in the ACC are expected to vote on the new signing day period on Wednesday.
