Clemson, SC—Ben Martin fired a one-under pr 71 and freshman Corbin Mills shot a two over par
74 to lead Clemson to a 298 team score and a four-shot lead after the
first round of the Jacksonville Invitational at the TPC Stadium Course at Ponte Vedra, FL. The event is being played at the site of the PGA’s Tournament Player’s Championship this coming May.
Clemson has a four-shot lead over East Tennessee State after the first round. The Tigers were at 10 over par 298, while the Bucs were at 14-over par 302. East
Carolina was in third place at 307 and Wake Forest was fourth at 308.
The 15-team field is trying to play 36 holes on Monday, but it is
questionable as to whether the second round will be finished on Monday
afternoon. Temperatures were in the mid-60s, but the winds were up for
the morning round.
Martin had a wild round with four birdies and an eagle.
But, he scored a double bogey five on the famous 17th hole, the island
hole at The Stadium Course. He rebounded however to finish with an
eagle on the second hole and a birdie on the third hole, his final hole
of the round in the shot-gun start formatted event. The Clemson
graduate from Greenwood was one of just two players to shoot under par
in the first round.,
Mills had a 74 that included three birdies. He had one
double bogey on the fifth hole, but other than that had a solid round.
He was tied for sixth place after the first round.
Senior Luke Hopkins had a four-ove-par 76 in the morning. His round
included three birdies and two double bogeys. Freshman Crawford
Reeves had a 77 and red-shirt freshman Brewer Bradshaw had an 81.
Bradshaw, playing in his first career tournament for the Tigers, had
three double bogeys in his first five holes, then settled down and
played his lat nine holes in two over par.
