Some of you are aware that my wife of almost 62 years fell in March of last year and broke her hip. She has also been suffering from dimentia which is a progressive ailment. She has been home since her fall but has not been able to walk. We have had an excellent care-giver with her for the past year. Recently she developed a urinary infection and was also becoming dehydrated so we took her to the hospital. Our son-in-law, who is also an M.D., has been a source of comfort as well as someone we could depend on for medical advice. The family decided that she would be better served by placing her in a nursing facility. We made this move yesterday and she is now at The Downs in Clemson, only 1.2 miles from our home. Decisions like this are difficult to make but we have to consider what is best for all concerned.
Some of you have probably experienced this same situation with a parent or a grandparent and can well understand the many things one must consider in making a decision of this nature. The toughest part in all of this is the thought that she will never return to our home. Fortunately, being this close to The Downs does make it easy to visit her each day.
