2013 Baseball Schedule Recap

With Opening Day less than two months away, TCI is gearing up for baseball season. This week we take a look at some notes about each of the teams on Clemson’s schedule in 2013. Stay tuned to TCI before each game/series as we break down each opponent in more detail as well as updating how their seasons are going.

 

Overall Notes:

  • The Tigers 56-game regular-season schedule features 36 home games, 2 matchups in Greenville (South Carolina – March 2 & Furman – May 8), and 18 road contests.
  • Clemson has 21 games against teams that participated in the 2012 NCAA Baseball Tournament. All of the games are three-game series (Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami (FL), NC State, North Carolina, South Carolina, & Virginia) and only seven of the matchups occur at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
  • The Tigers’ five ACC home series will be against Duke, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Virginia, and Wake Forest, while Clemson’s ACC road series will be at Boston College, Florida State, Miami (FL), NC State, and North Carolina. Clemson will not face Virginia Tech during the regular season.
  • The top-eight teams in the ACC standings will participate in the ACC Tournament at Durham Bulls Athletic Park from May 22-26. The tournament will be a round robin, pool play tournament (Wednesday–Saturday) with a winner-take-all championship game on Sunday.
  • It will be the eighth time overall, and the first time since 2011, that the ACC Tournament is held in Durham (including the 1996, 1998, 1999, 2009 and 2011 Tournaments at DBAP). Clemson is 10-13 in the previous seven ACC Tournaments held in Durham, including a 6-9 mark at DBAP.

 

Clemson and William & Mary:

  • The Tigers last faced William & Mary in 2006. Clemson won regular-season meetings against the Tribe in 2000 (10-6) and 2006 (10-5) and also had a 4-1 win in the 2001 Clemson Regional.
  • The last CAA team Clemson faced was UNC Wilmington in May of 2009. The Tigers won two of three games in the series (13-2, 11-3, & 3-4).
  • Clemson is 93-18 all-time against current CAA members, including a 74-9 mark at Clemson.

 

Clemson and Wright State:

  • The Tigers last faced Wright State in 2010, sweeping a three-game series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium (4-3, 8-6, & 12-6).
  • The 2010 series also happened on the second weekend of the regular-season.
  • Clemson has never faced another current member of the Horizon League in baseball.

 

Clemson and Winthrop

  • The Tigers face Winthrop for the second consecutive season and it will be the 11th straight meeting in the series between the teams at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
  • With an 11-0 win in 2012, Clemson is now 14-3 against the Eagles all-time at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
  • Three former Tigers are on the Winthrop coaching staff: Head Coach Tom Riginos (assistant coach 2003-10), Assistant Coach Ben Hall (player 2005-06 and student assistant coach 2007), and Volunteer Assistant Coach Wilson Boyd (player 2006-10).

 

Clemson and South Carolina:

  • The teams meet in their unique three-game series at three different sites for the fourth straight season, with Fluor Field in Greenville hosting the neutral site game for the third time.
  • The teams have faced each other in eight different cities in the state of South Carolina (Anderson, Charleston, Clemson, Columbia, Greenville, Orangeburg, Spartanburg, and Sumter).
  • The Tigers trail 6-8 all-time in neutral site contests, and have lost the last seven games held at neutral sites (last win was in Greenville in 1990).

 

Clemson and Wofford:

  • The Tigers have faced Wofford 100 times on the diamond dating back to 1896 and Clemson leads the series 76-23-1, including 13 straight wins.
  • Four current Tigers played in Clemson’s 5-1 win in 2011 (Jon McGibbon, Jonathan Meyer, Joseph Moorefield, & Kevin Pohle) with McGibbon making his first career start and Pohle earning his first career win.
  • The teams played a home-and-home series until 1949 and have only met 13 times since then, including a single game in 10 straight seasons from 2001-09.

 

Clemson and NC State:

  • The Tigers and NC State have met every season since 1953, the longest consecutive streak by Clemson against an ACC opponent.
  • The two teams have met four times in three of the past five seasons, and have met four times in 10 of Leggett’s 19 seasons at Clemson.
  • The Tigers are 12-12 in Raleigh under Jack Leggett despite winning only three of the eight series.

 

Clemson and Charleston Southern:

  • The Tigers are 16-0 all-time against Charleston Southern.
  • Clemson also holds a 13-0 advantage at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
  • The Buccaneers only NCAA Regional appearance came in 1996 at Clemson (lost 9-1 to Clemson and 4-1 to Tennessee).

 

Clemson and Virginia:

  • The Tigers have not won a regular-season series against Virginia since 2005 (Virginia won two games in the ACC Tournament that year in Jacksonville) and last won the entire season series in 2003.
  • After winning 27 straight home games in the series from 1975-97 and then winning 9 of the following 11 home meetings between the teams, Clemson is 1-6 in their last seven contests against Virginia at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
  • Since 2004, Virginia leads the series between the two teams 21-4 after Clemson held a 98-27 lead through the first 125 games in the series.

 

Clemson and Morehead State:

  • The Tigers last faced Morehead State in the season-opening series of 1997, sweeping a three-game series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium (6-2, 9-1, & 1-0).
  • Current Clemson Assistant Coach Bradley LeCroy was a freshman on the 1997 team.
  • Clemson is 11-0 all-time versus current Ohio Valley Conference members, with the last five meetings against coming against Tennessee Tech.

 

Clemson and Duke:

  • The Tigers and Duke have faced each other at least three times a season every year since 1990.
  • Clemson leads the all-time series 64-24-1 in games at Clemson, including a 45-6 mark at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
  • Duke will play 18 of its 31 home games at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park this season, the site of the 2013 ACC Baseball Tournament. The Tigers are 7-11 all-time at DBAP (1-2 versus Duke and 6-9 in the ACC Tournament).

 

Clemson and Georgia:

  • The Tigers and Bulldogs are scheduled to play a home-and-home series for the 15th straight season.
  • The two teams have met every season since 1959.
  • Georgia is Clemson’s second-most played opponent in program history with 222 previous meeting (Clemson has played South Carolina 300 times).

 

Clemson and North Carolina:

  • The Tigers and North Carolina have met on the diamond ever year but one (2007) since 1951.
  • The Tar Heels lead the all-time series 41-36 in games at North Carolina, thanks to winning five of the past six games (and the last two series) in Chapel Hill.
  • North Carolina is one of two ACC teams that Clemson has faced in Omaha at the College World Series while both teams were members of the conference (Georgia Tech – twice – is the other program).

 

Clemson and Gardner-Webb:

  • The Tigers are 8-0 all-time against Gardner-Webb, with the last meeting in the series coming in 2011.
  • Seven of the eight meetings have occurred at Clemson, with the last game in the series being played at Gardner-Webb.
  • The Tigers have outscored the Runnin’ Bulldogs 84-22 in the eight meetings, including a 30-2 advantage in the three-game series in 2011.

 

Clemson and Boston College:

  • The Tigers will face Boston College for the eighth straight season after not facing the Eagles in the previous 108 years of the program.
  • The two teams have played a doubleheader in the series four times in seven years, including all three times that the teams have met in Chestnut Hill.
  • After the first five series between the teams were won by a 2-1 margin, Clemson has swept the last two series (and won 10 of the last 11 meetings overall).

 

Clemson and Western Carolina:

  • The scheduled meeting at Western Carolina on April 9will mark the 15th time that Leggett has taken a Tiger team to Cullowhee.
  • This season will mark the 16th time in Coach Leggett’s 19 seasons at Clemson that the two teams have played at least two games against each other.
  • Leggett has been involved in 59 of the 69 contests the two schools have played in their history.

 

Clemson and Presbyterian College:

  • The Tigers face the Blue Hose for the sixth straight year after a 57-year break in the series.
  • Last season’s Presbyterian College win at Clemson was their first at Doug Kingsmore Stadium and first win in Clemson since 1949.
  • The Blue Hose have won two of the last three meetings between the teams in the last two seasons.

 

Clemson and Wake Forest:

  • The Tigers and Demon Deacons have met every season since 1954.
  • Wake Forest swept a three-game series from Clemson in 2012 for the first time since the 1999 (both times in Winston-Salem).
  • The Tigers are 22-5 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium under Jack Leggett, winning 13 of the last 14 meetings and all nine three-game series.

 

Clemson and Furman:

  • The Tigers and Furman have met on the diamond every season since 1983.
  • This is the sixth straight year that the teams are scheduled to play one contest at Clemson and another at Fluor Field in Greenville. The Tigers are 5-0 against the Paladins at Fluor Field, outscoring Furman 48-17 in the five meetings.
  • Clemson has made only two appearances at Furman since Leggett became the head coach in 1994 (winning 9-6 in 11 innings in 2001 and losing 10-8 in 2003).

 

Clemson and Miami (FL):

  • The Tigers last traveled to Coral Gables in 2008.
  • The Hurricanes lead the all-time series 14-9-1 in games at Miami and the teams have split the six meetings (both sweeps – Clemson in 2006 & Miami (FL) in 2008) in Coral Gables since the Hurricanes joined the ACC.
  • Clemson also leads the overall series 13-8 since the teams Miami (FL) joined the ACC for the 2005 season.

 

Clemson and Georgia Tech:

  • The Tigers and Georgia Tech have played every year but one (1973) since 1955, including seven contests during the 2006 season.
  • The 210 all-time meetings are the most ever for Clemson against a current ACC opponent.
  • In Leggett’s 19 seasons, the teams have met 73 times (tied with Florida State for most meetings against any opponent) while playing 18 times in the postseason (16 games in ACC Tournament and 2 meetings in the College World Series).

 

Clemson and Maryland:

  • The Tigers and Maryland have played at least one game every season since 1954.
  • Jack Leggett is 50-9 as Clemson’s head coach against the Terps.
  • The 50 wins are the most wins over any one opponent during Leggett’s time in Tigertown.

 

Clemson and Georgia Southern:

  • The Tigers and Georgia Southern last met in 2010 (a 22-6 Clemson win) and Clemson leads the all-time series 51-27-1.
  • This season’s scheduled three-game series will between the teams since a 1989 set in Statesboro (the team’s met four times in 1992 with two games in Clemson and two games in Statesboro).
  • Eagles Head Coach Rodney Hennon played for Jack Leggett at Western Carolina in 1990 and 1991, before later serving as the head coach for the Catamounts for two seasons before going to Georgia Southern.

 

Clemson and USC Upstate:

  • The Tigers and Spartans have met twice, a 14-0 Clemson win in 2009 and a 22-4 Tiger win in 2010.
  • Four Clemson pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter in the 2009 win at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
  • Clemson is 53-25-1 versus current Atlantic Sun members, including a 38-6 mark in games at Clemson.

 

Clemson and Florida State:

  • The Tigers and Seminoles have played at least three times every season since 1992, including 13 seasons of four or more meetings.
  • Clemson and the Florida State are the only two teams to win the Atlantic Division since the ACC went to the division format in 2006.
  • Despite the Seminoles holding a 19-11 advantage in ACC meetings in Tallahassee, the Tigers have won two of the past three series at Florida State.
