Time for the latest edition of Ask TCI. Each week we will take questions on the message board The Rock.
Each weekend we will run our Ask TCI feature with answers to some of the questions asked by the Clemson Insiders. Make sure to get your questions in next week.
Question – What are some of the things we are lacking that Dabo is talking about when the new recruiting rules go into effect?
TCI – Well there will be a number of changes when the new rules go into effect. The biggest change from the Clemson end will be how they organize recruiting and who, in addition to the staff, joins the recruiting process. In order to recruit you no longer need to be a coach on the staff. Clemson already had Brad Scott involved in recruiting but he could not contact recruits unless they were on campus.
We will see some schools build personnel departments that will rival what some NFL teams have.
With the new rules you will be more involved that are not on the staff. You will also see more marketing people involved when the unlimited contact rules go into effect. Clemson will need to be able to competed with the marketing materials they send out to the recruits.
Question – Have you heard anything on when Clemson will play ND or other non conference teams in 2014 and beyond.
TCI – We have reported that Clemson has asked to host Notre Dame in 2014 or 2016. We should get the Notre Dame future schedules announced soon with next year’s football schedule we believe.
If Clemson doesn’t get Notre Dame for 2014 they will likely have to fill that spot with a mid-major while they work on more longterm deals with several SEC schools.
Question – In your opinion, who will start in secondary vs GA? Oline?
TCI – We will see Blanks at one safety position and either Robert Smith or one of the freshmen at the other. At corner it is going to be a heck of a battle.
We certainly expect Alexander to start at corner next season. The question is will he be ready to start the first game of the year. Breeland is the leader for the other corner spot heading into the spring. Jenkins, Robinson and Peters will also compete for a starting role.
On the offensive line we would project Thomas and Battle at tackle, Beasley and Shatley at guard. The big question will be at center. Norton will be the leader going into the spring, but Guillermo will battle him this spring and during August camp.
Question – Any chance Dabo handles Watson’s recruitment from here on out himself in order to maybe decreasing his chances of decommiting if Morris were to lead. Sorta like putting our most prized recruit for 2014 into the hands of the best HC recruiter in Dabo.
TCI – Dabo was already heavily involved with Watson’s recruitment but he has now taken a bigger role. It seems to have worked well so far as Watson now says he is coming to play for Dabo and Clemson and it won’t matter if Morris is at Clemson. We will see if that attitude remains that same. Dabo and Clemson are certainly working hard to convince Watson and the other top offensive recruits that the offense will be the same, with or without Morris.
Question – Is Watson better than Kelly? Kelly will have 3 years left so how will Morris keep them both happy. I can’t see Watson coming to Clemson and waiting 3 years to get significant play and I can’t see Kelly with his ego sitting the bench in favor of Watson. Both obvioulsy have the talent to start somewhere. I know it will create some great competition, but how do you see this situation shaking out?
TCI – As we have reported previously the staff is very high on Kelly. In fact we have reported that if Tajh was not as talented as he is that Kelly would likely be playing this season. Watson is an incredible talent and will bring a true dual-threat to the Clemson QB position if he signs with the Tigers. It will be a great battle for sure. Kelly will have the advantage of experience while Watson will have the advantage of athleticism.
Question – Where does J Scott want to be: OC or recruiting?
TCI – With Clemson becoming a top ten program on a consistent basis and other teams improving the ACC looks to be more competitive in football in the near future. Louisville was a great addition and will be a top ten program again next year most likely. Florida State is on their way back so hopefully things will improve in regards to ACC football.
We haven’t heard any information about changes in the ACC offices.
