SUNSET, S.C. — Offensive coordinator Chad Morris said it did not matter if Chad Kelly stayed at Clemson or not, freshman Deshaun Watson was going to play this year.
In fact, Morris says Watson will play against Georgia on Aug. 30.
“That was the conscience from the get-go after watching him the first couple of practices in the spring,” said Morris from Dabo Swinney’s media golf outing on Tuesday at. “We knew he was going to be pretty special. He is going to play this year. He is going to play at Georgia. He is playing.”
But that does not mean Watson is starting, at least not at Georgia. Right now Cole Stoudt is Clemson’s starting quarterback when they head to Athens, Ga., for the first time since 2002.
“What is (Watson’s) role and how limited is it? That is to be determined through the progress,” Morris said. “Cole is our starter and I have complete confidence in Cole. We are excited about Cole.
“Cole Stoudt knows this offense inside and out. It is his time and he is due. He has backed up Tajh and he needs to take that same leadership role that Tajh had and bring Deshaun Watson underneath his wing.”

Offense needs to step up. Morris says if his offense does not score more than 26 points a game this year—despite not having a Tajh Boyd or Sammy Watkins—than he is not going to be a happy camper.
“I will be very disappointed in our guys if we are not one of the top offenses in the country. That is our expectations. That’s what we do.”
Clemson averaged 40.2 points and 508.5 total yards per game last season. The Tigers return 25 lettermen, but just four were starters from that unit.
“We are kind of unsung heroes right now,” Morris said. “It kind of reminds me of my first year here when the expectations weren’t too high, you know where you score 26 points a game and everything is fine.
“Well, if we score 26 points a game I’m going to be pretty ticked off to be honest with you. I like the fact we are an underdog because we have kind of been in that frontrunner role with a lot of talk being about Tajh and Sammy. Well, the challenge is to prove we have not been a two-man show. That’s big talk, and believe me I’m going to tell them that from day one, to day two, to day three. They have a lot to prove because they are not giving you any credit.”
