Catching up with Kelly Bryant

PIEDMONT – Kelly Bryant is still in the developmental stages on the field as a quarterback.

Away from it, he’s acts and sounds like a seasoned veteran. After last week’s scrimmage against Spartanburg, Bryant credited his teammates when asked about his impressive touchdown run on the first Wren possession of the game.

“We were driving. The blocking, the guys up front, they set it up. The receivers out there, I just tried to read their blocks and get in there,” he said. “Luckily, got in there and scored.”

The score countered the punch Spartanburg’s Tavien Feaster threw on the first play of the game, an 80-yard touchdown run.

Feaster, who’s one of the nation’s top running back prospects in the class of 2016, isn’t just being recruited to Clemson by the Tigers’ coaches.

“I know him, so every time I talk to him, I put a little Clemson in his ear,” Bryant said.

For Bryant, last week’s encounter with Feaster and Spartanburg marked the first time he’d played real, live football since undergoing stomach surgery.

“It feels good to be back out here with my teammates, to have all of that behind me and not have to worry about it,” Bryant said. “But, yeah, it was real good being out there with my teammates. I was just having fun playing football, the game I love.”

Bryant looks forward to linking up with his future teammates at Clemson, specifically the guys in the 2015 class.

“It’s real exciting, especially having 13 enrollees, the guys who signed the financial aid (agreements),” he said. “We’re still looking to build on it. Like the coaches said, we’ve got one or two spots open.

“I really like the class we’ve got so far.”
