Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney pointed out after Wednesday’s practice that Jameis Winston is not bigger than the Florida State team. And though he will be missed by the Seminoles as he sits out the first half due to a suspension, it doesn’t mean top-ranked Florida State will struggle on offense without him.
Backup quarterback Sean Maguire will have plenty of weapons to distribute and hand the football to when the Seminoles host No. 22 Clemson at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla., on Saturday.
“They are awfully good,” Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables said.
The Seminoles (2-0) are good just about everywhere on offense. The offensive line is considered the best in the country by some and will be a good matchup for the Tigers’ vaunted defensive front, while wide receiver Rashad Greene leads the ACC in receptions (15), receptions per game (7.5), yards (283) and yards per game (141.5).
Against Clemson the last three years, Greene has recorded 16 catches for 280 yards and four touchdowns. Last year, he torched the Tigers for eight catches for 146 yards and two scores, including a 72-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown.
“We have great respect for him,” Venables said. “He made a bunch of plays for them a year ago. He is very fast. He has played well against us now for a couple of years. Against Oklahoma State, he was the difference in that game.
“You hear about him a lot in this building. You just have to watch the tape. He is a playmaker.”
Tight Nick O’Leary is a playmaker, too. He had five catches for161 yards in last year’s 51-14 win for the Seminoles.
“What I like about Nick O’Leary as a football coach and respecting talent and production is his toughness. He is a tough player,” Venables said. “He has deceptive speed and exceptional hands, but he is very strong and understands how to get open.
“He is very physical in his route running. He is a very good player.”
Florida State is also loaded at running back where they have Karlos Williams, Dalvin Cook and Mario Pender. Other playmakers include speedster Kermit Whitfield and Christian Green at wide receiver.
“Look, we are going to play Florida State. That’s who we are going to play,” Swinney said. “We are not playing Jameis Winston. We are playing Florida State. If we are trying to beat one player, then we are in for a long night.”
