Byers moves to offense

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said following Wednesday’s practice that they moved Roderick Byers over to the offensive line.

Byers is a redshirt junior defensive tackle, who at first was not too keen on moving over to the offensive line.

“He wasn’t okay with it at first, but once he realized it was his best opportunity to play he is now okay,” Swinney said.

Byers will wear No. 70 on the offensive line as opposed to the No. 55 he wore on defense. The junior played 13 snaps last week in the Tigers’ 41-0 victory over NC State and had one tackle. He played 18 snaps against S.C. State and had three tackles in that game.

There is a possibility they could move Byers back to defense next year, but right now there is plenty of depth on the defensive line and they need more people on the O-line.

Clemson plans to play only six people on the offensive line on Saturday against Louisville with Reid Webster starting at right guard, while backing up the center, right tackle and left tackle positions.

Swinney says moving Byers might hurt the team with experience on the defensive line next year, but not with depth.

“We will be talented, but inexperienced with our depth,” he said. “That will be the biggest difference with our team as opposed to this year. But we can always move Rod back, but that will be something we will have to see.”

Venables playing QB. Swinney said they have been running two scout team quarterbacks all week to get the different looks the Cardinals will give them with Will Gardner and Reggie Bonnafon at the quarterback position.

Gardner has been hurt the last two weeks and Bonnafon has started in each of the Cardinals’ two wins over Wake Forest and Syracuse. But Swinney expects Clemson will see both quarterbacks at some point on Saturday.

Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino said earlier he isn’t sure who will start at quarterback and who will play.

But defensive coordinator Brent Venables is not taking any chances so when things were not going quite well for the defense with its scout team looks on Wednesday, the former Kansas State linebacker got under center himself.

“He ran two periods at quarterback,” Swinney said. “He wanted to sling it around a little bit and run it at his tempo. I’m not sure how much that prepares us with Coach V working at quarterback, but there was a high sense of urgency. I will tell you that.”

Injury update. Swinney reported that linebacker Ben Boulware (concussion) is looking good, while fellow linebacker and starter on the strong side, Tony Steward (hamstring pull), is much better, but it is only Wednesday and he is not ready to play as of Wednesday.

“Hopefully, if he can continue to make the type of progress he is making, hopefully he will be ready,” Swinney said. “Boulware has looked good in practice and so has Kellen (Jones).”

Wide receiver Charone Peake (knee) is still a little limited and is sore from the shot he got on Sunday to help with the swelling in his knee.

Offensive tackle Joe Gore, who had an appendectomy last week, is recovering well and actually might get to play at Boston College on Oct. 18. Swinney says he only needed a laparoscopy and that has helped him heal quicker.

Doctors have told Swinney that Gore will be able to practice some next week.
