Even with the drop in the number of Clemson targets playing in this year’s Shrine Bowl, there are still a few storylines worth keeping an eye on this week at Spartanburg High School.
Since 2009, all but one Shrine Bowl has featured multiple Clemson targets who were not committed to the Tigers.
Trevion Thompson was one of two last year,. The other, Hunter Renfrow, would go on to accept a preferred walk-on spot at Clemson over a scholarship from Appalachian State. Thompson picked Clemson over UNC and N.C. State.
In 2012, Tyrone Crowder was widely considered a Clemson lean, but he didn’t commit to the Tigers until signing day. North Carolina teammate Korrin Wiggins was committed to UNC but looking at Clemson and Ohio State until he was flipped on signing day. Todd Gurley was also on that squad.
D.J. Reader was deciding between Clemson, UNC and Maryland in 2011.
Stephone Anthony, Jerell Adams and Jadeveon Clowney were the non-committed Clemson targets in 2010.
The 2009 game featured Keenan Allen, an Alabama commit during Shrine Bowl week who would consider Clemson at the last minute. Clemson also went down to the wire for defensive tackle Ethan Farmer, who inked with UNC. Clemson picked up a commitment from Tra Thomas that week.
This week, most of the Clemson-related targets are committed. Daniel High School defensive back Amir Trapp, the son of James, could potentially get on board with the Tigers as a greyshirt or preferred walk-on.
Tanner Muse and Logan Tisch are the only Clemson commitments on the North Carolina team. South Carolina has four: Kelly Bryant, Kaleb Chalmers, Noah Green and Albert Huggins.
Here’s what we’re looking to see from those guys at Spartanburg High School this week.
Huggins v. Bailey II. They squared off earlier this year during a preseason scrimmage between Summerville and Orangeburg-Wilkinson. And we’ll probably see them go head-to-head during practice this week. In fact, it could end up as the premier 1-on-1 we’ll see at any point. Zack Bailey’s future in Columbia and Huggins’ pending career at Clemson make it that much more interesting.
Future teammates. Don’t forget about Noah Green. He might get overshadowed in the Tigers’ offensive line class, but this week will allow him a chance to shine. Good work against Huggins would be a nice place to start. It will also be interesting to see what position Green plays the most, because he’s such a versatile prospect.
Future QB. This time next month, Bryant will be in the midst of a battle for the No. 2 quarterback job at Clemson, but we’ll get a chance to see him put a bow on what’s been an outstanding high school career.
Movement ahead. There was a time when Muse was listed by Scout as a four-star, but he was dropped down to three several months ago. This week could give him a chance to rise in the Scout, Rivals and 247 rankings. Prediction: Muse will see an uptick in his ranking and rating.
Variety of matchups. Chalmers will have several different kinds of wide receivers to defend during 1-on-1 and 7-on-7 work. Among the short, shifty guys is Northwestern’s Dupree Hart, who’s going to play baseball at Collge of Charleston. Then there’s Chalmers’ Greenwood teammate, Mock Adams who is one of the bigger targets on the South Carolina side. Dorman’s J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, a Stanford commit, has good size. So does Byrnes’ Tavin Richardson.
