Ninth inning rally lifts Tigers

In the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and two outs on a full count, Clemson’s Chase Pinder was hit by a pitch, scoring the winning run as the Tigers downed Furman, 5-4, Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Tyler Vetzel was the player of the game for the Tigers. Vetzel came in and worked out  of trouble in the seventh inning after Drew Moyer was injured and finished the game off for the Tigers.

Vetzel went 2.2 innings and gave up two hits and no runs, while striking out four and issuing no walks.

The Tigers (14-13) search for a mid-week starter may be over. Clate Schmidt had a no hitter going into the sixth inning, before finishing in the seventh inning. He went 6.1 innings, while giving up three earned runs on four hits.

The Paladins took the lead in the top of the fourth as they plated one run.

Clemson took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Tyler Krieger doubled down the left field line to start the inning. Reed Rolman walked before Chris Okey hit a bomb to center field for a three-run home run to put Clemson up 3-1.

The Tigers added another run in the fifth inning. Tyler Slaton singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Slaton then advanced to third on a ground ball by Steven Duggar for the first out. Tyler Krieger, who was 4-for-4, singled to right to score Slaton.

Furman tied the game in the top of the seventh as it plated three runs. It could have been much worse for the Tigers. Moyer came out with an apparent shoulder injury with a full count and the bases loaded with only one out.  Vetzel came in for the Tigers and got two strikeouts to end the threat.

Vetzel left the field after the seventh to a well deserved standing ovation.

In the bottom of the ninth Slaton walked to start the inning. Then Duggar singled to advance Slaton to third. Krieger was intentionally walked to load the bases after that.

Reed Rohlman hit a short fly ball to center for the first out.  But Pinder worked the count to 3-2 and was hit by an inside pitch to score Slaton and give the Tigers the win.
