Head coach Dabo Swinney was certainly thrilled after No. 6 Clemson defeated Notre Dame last Saturday, and his locker room celebration went viral, once again.
When Swinney came in for his weekly press conference on Tuesday, he was still noticeably enthusiastic and even stated that he is just happy. The Tigers are certainly happy as well, but the focus has been switched to Georgia Tech.
Here is what we heard from Tuesday’s press conference and interview session:
Swinney has confidence his team is not complacent after their win over Notre Dame because they know each game is a one-game season.
“Whenever we have had other big wins around here where we have come back and played well. Our expectation is a one-game season. It is a season of its own every single week. You evaluate that season and at the end of that year you have a consensus. That’s just the way we do things,” Swinney said.
Defensive end Kevin Dodd was not only the ACC’s defensive lineman of the week, but also Clemson’s player of the game. Swinney said he is very proud of Dodd for never giving up.
“He is a great example to the team. He is a great example to the media. The guy is developed. He is a great example to us in recruiting. Not everybody is Sammy Watkins as a freshmen. Kevin is such a great example that guys get better and guys develop and he was a guy that we really took simply on potential,” Swinney said. “I’m proud of Dodd because he never quit believing in himself. He continued to prepare and learn. He has been the player of the game for us twice in four games and he is ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week. He is just scraping the surface of what he can do.”
On the defensive side of the ball, defensive coordinator Brent Venables was happy about the win, but he knows that his players can do better for all four quarters of the game.
“We just broke down fundamentally and with our discipline. We had guys trying to do too much,” Venables said. “We saw some guys panicking. They were throwing the ball one or two yards beyond the line of scrimmage and they were turning it into 30- to 40-yard gains.”
“They are a good football team that showed us a few things we need to get better at,” he continued.
Safety Jayron Kearse agrees that the defense can make some improvements before Georgia Tech makes a visit to the Valley.
“We’re going to attack those things this week,” Kearse said. “We’re going to go out there and correct them against Georgia Tech.”
Kicker Ammon Lakip held his first interview since being suspended, and the first thing he did was apologize for his actions. He also thanked the people who never stopped supporting him. He said he received nothing but support from his teammates when he returned as well.
“A lot of the older guys who have been around me for awhile checked up on me and that was really nice. I appreciate that for sure,” Lakip said.
Saturday was special for Lakip because he earned the Beaver Award for causing the first fumble of the game in his first game back out on the field. Although there is not currently an open competition for the starting kicking role, Lakip said he will do whatever is best for the team.
“I’m going to be the best backup field goal kicker in the nation,” Lakip said.
