GREENVILLE — There was very little doubt Clemson was going to beat Presbyterian on Tuesday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville. The question was how focused the Tigers might be after suffering such a heartbreaking loss to Alabama just 48 hours earlier.
Though it was not the prettiest of performances, the Tigers bounced back to down PC, 69-41.
“I thought we did the things we needed to do to win,” Clemson head coach Brad Brownell said. “We made it hard on (DeSean) Murray. He is a good player. He is an undersized guy that knows how to score and we made him take a lot of shots to get his points.
“We did a good job of blocking out and getting in transition to get a few easy baskets. We did not shoot the ball well, but it was good to see Gabe (DeVoe) make threes in the first half to kind of open things up for us.”
Clemson was led by Sidy Djitte’s 12 points and 13 rebounds, the second double-double of his career.
“My teammates were just able to find me,” Djitte said. “If you watched the game, I did not make one single move. It was all layups so they did a good job of finding me on the block so it was all them.”
Point guard Avry Holmes also scored 12 points and had five assists.
The Tigers (7-3) used a 14-0 run over a six and a half minute span in the second half to overtake the Blue Hose, who hung tough for a little while. That run gave the Tigers a 60-32 lead with 8:52 to play in the game on a Djitte layup.
Djitte scored six straight points during the 14-0 second half run.
“Our guys have done a pretty good job in these games,” Brownell said. “We have played well. We have defended well in those games and have played at a pretty good level.”
Clemson led by 10 points at the break, 36-26, thanks to 11 first-half points by Gabe DeVoe. Presbyterian actually had an 11-8 lead with 14:19 to play in the first half, but the Tigers used a 16-4 run to gain control of the game.
A steal and dunk by DeVoe gave Clemson a 24-15 lead with 9:21 to play in the half. The sophomore later hit a three-pointer from the right corner to up the lead to 32-18, and Donte Grantham drained a three from the left corner a minute later to make the score, 36-22.
“It is always good to get a win,” Djitte said. “That loss the other day was tough, but that was not our main focus. It was to play the right way and the way we want. We were able to do that and we got a good win.”
PC (4-6) got no closer than 12 points in the second half and that came with 19:08 to play in the game. Holmes and Grantham made back-to-back three-pointers to extend the lead back to 18 points and then poured it on from there.
The Blue Hose closed the game by missing 17 of their last 20 shots. PC shot 27.6 percent for the game and was six of 27 in the second half.
The Tigers will play rival South Carolina on Friday in Greenville at 7 p.m.
