MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Shaq Lawson came roaring out of the gates.
On the first play of first play from scrimmage, the star defensive end pulled down Oklahoma’s star quarterback Baker Mayfield for a sack.
Lawson subbed himself out after the next play and missed the rest of the drive. Trainers examined his left knee as the Sooners marched down field for the game’s first touchdown.
Clemson answered with a field goal and Lawson returned for the next defensive possession. A three-and-out later, Lawson’s night was done. He was officially declared out for the game at halftime. ESPN’s Joe Schad reported that Lawson’s knee was sprained.
Fellow starter Kevin Dodd picked up the slack, along with backup defensive ends Austin Bryant and Richard Yeargin III.
Dodd finished Clemson’s 37-17 win in the Orange Bowl with three tackles for loss, including one sack.
Bryant, who took most of the snaps in Lawson’s place, had four tackles and a 1/2 sack. Yeargin also had a tackle.
The trio chased Mayfield around the Oklahoma backfield all night. They were also critical in holding the Sooner ground game to 67 yards.
