Okey, Schmidt lead Clemson over James Madison

Clate Schmidt pitched seven strong innings and Chris Okey went 2-4 with five RBI’s to lead the Tigers to a 10-1 win over James Madison Saturday afternoon.

“It was a big win for our guys.  After winning game one we came out and had a great approach, very focused,” said coach Monte Lee.

Clate Schmidt pitched a gem for the Tigers going 7.0 innings and only giving up three hits and no runs with four strikeouts.  Schmidt moved to 2-0 on the season.

“It all starts with Clate Schmidt.  He threw the ball exceptionally well.  He gave us seven innings and gave up nothing,” said coach Lee.

Alex Schnell gave up one hit in the eighth and no runs.  Andrew Papp had his first appearance for the Tigers when he started the ninth.

Clemson jumped on the Dukes early with five runs in the second.  Weston Wilson singled to left to start the inning then stole second.  Adam Renwick walked after Wilson advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Chase Pinder continued his hot streak at the plate with a single to score Wilson.  Eli White singled to left center to score Renwick.  Reed Rohlman continued the hit parade with an RBI single to score Pinder.  Chris Okey singled to score Rohlman and White.

Okey hit his second home run of the series in the fourth inning.  Chase Pinder walked to start the inning and then advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Eli White walked.  With one out Okey hit a home run to left to earn his fourth RBI of the day and make it 8-0 Tigers.

“Chris Okey had an unbelievable day.  He hit a homer and drove in five,” said coach Lee.

Jordan Green got his first hit for the Tigers in the eighth with a leadoff double.  Eli White grounded out advancing Green to third.  Glenn Batson walked and K.J. Bryant came in to pinch run.  With one out Andrew Cox grounded out to score Green.  Robert Jolly walked before Chris Williams hit a two out single to score Byrant and make it 10-0 Clemson.

James Madison got on the board in the ninth with one run.

The Tigers advanced to 4-1 on the season with the win.  Clemson goes for the sweep Sunday at 1 PM when they finish the series with James Madison.
