The Clemson Insider takes a look back at No. 18 Clemson’s win over Charleston Southern on Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
What happened?
The Tigers (35-18) got on the board in the second inning on a two-out single from Andrew Cox to take a 1-0 lead. The next almost six innings would turn into a duel between pitching staffs before Clemson broke through for two runs in the eighth on a RBI double from Chris Okey and a RBI fielder’s choice from Robert Jolly. The Buccaneers (18-32) would plate two runs in the ninth but stranded runners on the corners as Alex Eubanks induced a lineout to end the game.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the eighth inning. Clinging to a 1-0 lead, the Tigers were able to push across two key insurance runs. Seth Beer would start the inning with a walk before pinch runner KJ Bryant stole second. Bryant would come in to score on Okey’s double and Okey would move up to third on a groundout. Following a walk to Chris Williams, Jolly hit a bouncer up the middle and though Charleston Southern was able to get Williams out at second they could not turn the double play thanks to a hard slide into second. Jolly beating out the throw allowed Okey to come in and give Clemson a 3-0 lead.
What went right?
The Tigers pulled out a tough one. They made their hits count while using eight walks and productive outs to plate three runs. The pitching staff certainly made their contribution as eight different pitchers combined to allow just two runs on nine hits while stranding 12 Buccaneer base runners.
