CLEMSON – After playing angry against Syracuse, the Clemson Tigers are ready to return to Memorial Stadium for Saturday’s Homecoming game against Wake Forest.
Clemson faces a defense in Wake that head coach Dabo Swinney says is one of the best groups the Tigers will play from a secondary standpoint.
The Clemson offense, however, has been sharp the last two weeks.
“We’ve gotten better every single week and that’s what you want to see out of not only a team, but the offense in particular,” running back Will Shipley said.
The Tigers (3-2, 1-2 ACC) have improved. With defenses keying on Shipley and the running game, Clemson has gone to the air, where quarterback Cade Klubnik and receivers like Tyler Brown, Troy Stellato and Beaux Collins stepped up to make plays.
“We’ve got all time confidence in this offense,” Shipley said. “There’s never a time where we’ve lacked belief in how we can move the ball if we just make the routine plays and do everything that we do out there on this practice field.”
The biggest difference for Clemson in last week’s win over Syracuse was the turnovers, the lack of turnovers that is. After coughing the ball up three times at Duke in the season opener—twice inside the 5-yard line—the Tigers are beginning to clean up those mistakes.
Against the Orange, the Tigers won the turnover margin for just the second time this season. They also committed just one turnover, while Klubnik had none.
The end result was a more efficient offense that found success in the passing game, which led to more success in the running game in the second half.
“The adversity has shined us up, not grinded us up,” Shipley said.
Clemson and Wake Forest will kick off from Death Valley at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be televised by ACCN.
