Riley Promises ‘Hungry’ Offense Coming Out of Bye Week

Clemson offensive coordinator Garrett Riley cannot say for sure what has caused the Tigers offense to be so inconsistent over the first half of the season. However, he knows where to start looking.

“It starts up front. As we continue to try and find the best chemistry and continuity up front, that is always going to be the case,” he said. “It is always going to start there. That is part of the equation for sure. Just continue to develop those guys up front for sure.”

Clemson’s biggest problem up front has been the right guard position on the offensive line. Walker Parks was lost for the season very early in the 2023 campaign and his replacement, Mitchell Mayes, has been very inconsistent. So much so, they burned freshman Harris Sewell’s redshirt.

But the offensive line has not been the only issue.

Quarterback Cade Klubnik has been inconsistent. The wide receivers have been up and down, and the running game has been all over the place.

The Tigers, who are off this weekend, have had mistakes come from everywhere on offense, and unfortunately for them, they have come at the worst possible times.

“I wish you could pinpoint one thing because that would make it easier to fix, but football can be a complicated game that way, with all the different factors going into it,” Riley said.

It has not been all bad for Clemson. The Tigers have shown signs of being their old self. Against Florida State they totaled 429 yards, including 126 rushing yards in the second half.

Against Wake Forest last week, they ran for 167 yards in the second half.

Klubnik, for the most part, has been solid in the passing game and is taking care of the football. He has not thrown an interception since Week 2. He has now thrown 151 consecutive passes without an interception.

However, it does not mean he is perfect, either. Klubnik has gotten away with several passes over the last four games that should have been picked off. He also has lost several critical fumbles over the first half of the season. Plus, the passing game took a step back in the Wake Forest game.

But that is what inconsistent means. There is a lot of good and there is a lot of bad.

“Listen, we have done a lot of good things in the last several weeks. We have improved,” Riley said. “We just have to continue to stay the course and put it all together and I think that is what this group will do. They will come out hungry out of this bye week.”
