While the Tigers held Auburn to only one touchdown Saturday night, Xavier Brewer knows there is a lot of room for improvement for the Clemson defense. The main area that Brewer feels the Tigers must improve is in their preparation. According to Brewer, this is one area the Tigers struggled this past week.
“We need to prepare with more of a sense of urgency next week. I personally do not like our sense of urgency on Wednesday and Thursday of last week, we will have to fix that this week,” said Brewer.
While Brewer felt the Tigers did not have the sense of urgency they needed, he was quick to tell reporters that the Tigers did have a “good” sense of urgency; Brewer just feels that this team needs to take it to a higher level this week.
“We had a good sense of urgency, but I do not think it was where it needed to be preparation wise, in the meeting rooms and on the practice field,” said Brewer.
Auburn was able to complete a couple of long passes on Clemson Saturday night. According to Brewer, this was due to poor alignment by defenders, something that he feels the Tigers can easily correct.
“A big glaring thing was alignment and our eyes. That is a thing I definitely feel we can fix. Especially with Ball State, we will have to be able to line up faster,” said Brewer.
Brewer was very happy with the effort this team played with, the Tigers never gave up, playing from behind multiple times, including late in the game to come back and defeat Auburn. Brewer attributes this to playing with great effort, something he feels Clemson did for all 60 minutes.
“We played with a lot of effort. I think that is the main reason we got away with the win,” said Brewer.
When the Tigers take the field against Ball State on Saturday, it will be the final home opener for Brewer. Brewer is excited to take the field in Death Valley for one final season as a Clemson Tiger. “I can not wait, it is my last first time. I am super excited. I am excited to see all the new stuff and play in front of our fans.” This excitement from the fans, and the chance to add on to the 7-game home wining streak and go to 2-0 in 2012, will hopefully give Brewer and the Tigers the sense of urgency they need to succeed.
