Here is an inside look at the Clemson-Maryland series as the eighth-ranked Clemson Tigers host Maryland at Memorial Stadium in Clemson. The game will be televised by ESPNU at 3:32 p.m.
About the Terrapins: Maryland is in a real fix. First off, they have had three quarterbacks go down with season-ending injuries, and all three have been torn ACLs. Then this week, the Terps learn that leading tackler Demetrius Hartsfield is gone to an ACL injury, while wide receiver Stefon Diggs and running back Wes Brown are out as well with ankle injuries.
The Terrapins offense: Maryland has lost starter C.J. Brown, backup Perry Hills and freshman backup Caleb Rowe all to ACL injuries. Freshman Shawn Petty, a converted linebacker, will be making his second start of the year. The Terps will go with freshman Brandon Ross and sophomore Justus Pickett at running back.
The Terrapins defense: Maryland leads the ACC in sacks with 31, and defensive end Joe Vellano is a big reason why. He leads the league in tackles for a loss with 14 and has six sacks as well. The Terps may have only three interceptions on the season, but they do a good job preventing the big plays. Teams are only averaging 192 yards a game through the air.
The Terrapins Special Teams: With Diggs out, the Terps have a significant drop off in the return game. The freshman ranks second in the ACC in all-purpose yards at 174.9 per game and was averaging 27 yards a return on kickoffs. Ross will take over as the kick returner and Dexter McDougle will handle punt returns. Brendan Magistro is the placekicker and is just 8 of 14 on the season.
