Handing out the Grades – Offense

Clemson continues to elevate their recruiting as the Tigers signed their third straight top 13 class on Wednesday.  Recruiting is all about filling the needs and once again the staff did a great job of filling many of the needs this year.

How did each position grade out this year?  TCI hands out the grades for the offense.

Running Back:  B

Running back was one of the big need areas for 2013.  Clemson signed two 4-star running backs Tyshon Dye and Wayne Gallman.  Both will get a chance to compete for playing time as true freshmen.

Dye could be Clemson’s Todd Gurley.  Clemson has not had this type of back since James Davis.  Gallman is a great all around back.  He is great catching the ball out of the backfield and has very good vision.

Offensive Line: B

Offensive line was not a need area for the Tigers in this year’s class with Dalton Freeman the only departure.  The Tigers landed All-American Tyrone Crowder who committed on National Signing Day along with very underrated Maverick Morris.  A very solid class when there was no real need.

Receiver:  B +

Clemson needed to land a couple of future playmakers at receiver with the departures of Nuk Hopkins and Jaron Brown.  The Tigers did just that by landing the state’s best receiver, 4-star Mike Williams.  Williams will bring similar qualities to Clemson that Nuk Hopkins brought three years  ago.  4-starsKy Priester and T.J. Green were great late additions.

The miss on DeMarcus Robinson hurt and this class would have been an A with him, but Clemson did a very good job of meeting the need of adding some talented quality depth at receiver.

Landing three 4-star receivers is a very strong class.

Tight End:  B

Clemson added a very talented tight end prospect in 4-star Jordan Leggett.  Leggett is an outstanding receiver with the frame to put on some weight and be an outstanding Tight End for the Tigers.

Quarterback:  C

With some late attrition to the quarterback depth this position became a position of potential need late in the process.  The Tigers were in position to land Elite 11 MVP Asiantii Woulard before they backed of late due to some concerns they found as they did more research on the young man.

Clemson is in good shape at quarterback for 2013 and  already have a commitment from the nation’s top 2014 quarterback DeShaun Watson.  If the Tigers land Watson then the depth will be in great shape for the future.

Overall: B

Clemson has one of the top offensive teams in the nation.  With good depth returning at most positions Clemson did a very solid job of adding some outstanding talent.  Clemson landed eight offensive players in the 2013 class.  Seven of those seven were 4-stars.

There may not be a Sammy Watkins or C.J. Spiller in this class, but it is a very good offensive class.
