Sunday Look Back

CLEMSON — Here is a look back at Clemson’s 7-0 win over Wright State on Sunday.

What happened?

The Tigers scored an early run then padded the lead with some big, late innings to sweep the series from Wright State and move to 5-1 on the season.

Game-Changing Moment:

Jay Baum hit a bases clearing double to cap off a five-run seventh inning and give Clemson a 7-0 lead.

Story Line:

The big news on Sunday was Scott Firth’s pitching and the Tigers again using timely hitting, despite a slow start, to earn their second straight shutout. It was the first time since 2009 Clemson had back-to-back shutouts and the first time since 2002 they accomplished the feat against the same team.

Turning Point:

The turning point in the game came in the seventh inning. With the Tigers holding a 2-0 lead, the offense came to live scoring five runs on just four hits and finally getting into the Wright State bullpen.

What went right?

Scott Firth continued to impress with his second straight solid start. The senior earned his second win of the year by throwing a career-high 8.0 innings and did not allow a run on only five hits. The Clemson offense continued to be effective scoring their seven runs on just seven hits, but took advantage of six walks and a Raider error. The Tiger defense continued to impress with another double play (the eighth of the year) and Duggar throwing two guys out at the plate.

What went wrong?

It is hard to find anything wrong when a team completes a weekend sweep, but the Tiger bats took some time to get going. Despite scoring an early run, Clemson did not record their first hit until the sixth inning. With the South Carolina series on deck next weekend and then ACC play coming, the offense will need to find ways to get the bats going earlier in games.

They said it.

Clemson Head Coach Jack Leggett

“Scott Firth was outstanding today, we played good defense all weekend, and we able to get some timely hits. If we can bring that to the ballpark every day it will give us a chance to win.”

Clemson Senior Righthander Scott Firth

“I was just trying to attack the strike zone and get some quick outs. My defense was great behind me today and that helps a ton.”
