CLEMSON — Here is a look back at Clemson’s 5-2 win over Morehead State on Wednesday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

What happened?

Three Tiger pitchers (Brody Koerner, Jonathan Meyer, & Zack Erwin) allowed on two of Morehead State’s 16 baserunners to score and Jonathan McGibbon knocked in three runs as Clemson beat Morehead State 5-2 to sweep the midweek series and improve to 13-7 on the season.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changing moment came in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the game knotted at 2-2, Garrett Boulware led off with a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt by Shane Kennedy. McGibbon followed with a flare down the right field line to score Boulware and give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.

Story Line:

Unlike yesterday, this game was close until the end. The two teams traded runs early before Clemson was able to finally create some separation in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Turning Point:

The turning point in Wednesday’s game came in the top of the fifth inning. With the game tied at 1-1 and the bases loaded with one out for Morehead State, Eagles catcher Chris Robinson lined a single to right to score one run. Steven Duggar nailed the other runner at the plate to prevent another run and keep the Morehead State lead at 2-1.

What went right?

The Tiger pitching staff came up big as they allowed only two of 16 baserunners to score, stranding 10 runners with seven of those in scoring position. Garrett Boulware continued his hot start going 2-for-2, while McGibbon was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Duggar and Tyler Krieger both added two hits. The Clemson defense, despite another error, had a strong day as they turned three double plays in the contest.

What went wrong?

The Tigers were outhit 10-9 in the game and thus were never able to pull away. Steve Wilkerson committed an error, his eighth of the season and twice as many as any other player. Clemson also had some spotty base running, with two guys thrown out trying to swipe bases.

They said it.

Clemson Head Coach Jack Leggett

”Every game has been tough for us. Nothing has been easy. They are all just as important. Every game is important around here. It’s important because it points toward the weekend, but we were not looking ahead to that. It was important that we try to take care of our business on Tuesday and Wednesday.”

Clemson First Baseman Jon McGibbon

“It feels good. I’m not worried or concerned about (my hitting). Obviously, it feels good to help the team win, but I’m more concerned to make sure these guys are ready to play and ready to win every day. My confidence has been there. There have been a few times where my timing was a little bit off, but for the most I feel like I have been hitting the ball hard, but they just have not been dropping in for me.”
