Tallahassee – Florida State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and held on for a 2-1 victory over the Tigers to even the series.
Matthew Crownover got the start for the Tigers and went 4.1 innings before leaving because of stiffness in his arm. Crownover, who was close to his pitch count when he left, gave up five hits, two runs and two earned runs.
Clate Schmidt returned to the mound for the first time since getting hit by a pitch against Maryland. Schmidt pitched a gem going 3.2 innings and not allowing a single hit.
The Noles loaded the bases in the bottom of the first with a single, a double and hit by pitch. Davis singled to right to put the Noles up 2-0. Crownover battled back with two strikeouts and a pop to third to work out of trouble.
Clemson got on the board in the top of the sixth. Steve Wilkerson singled to center to start the inning. With one out Garrett Boulware doubled down the right field line advancing Wilkerson to third. Shane Kennedy grounded to short scoring Wilkerson to make the score 2-1. Neither team would plate another run after the top of the sixth.
The Tigers outhit the Noles seven to five but could only manage one run. Steve Wilkerson led the Tigers going 3-4.
Clemson fell to 39-16 on the season with the loss and 18-11 in the ACC. The Tigers and Noles will play the deciding game Saturday at 3 PM. If the Tigers win Saturday they will win the Atlantic Division if NC State falls at Duke.
