Florida State Takes Game Three 6-1

Tallahassee – The Tigers took an early lead, but couldn’t score again as Florida State downed Clemson 6-1 Saturday afternoon to win the Atlantic Division.  With the loss and a North Carolina State win Clemson finishes in third place in the Atlantic Division.

Both teams totaled 13 hits on the day, but Clemson could only manage one run.

Zack Erwin got the start for the Tigers but ran into trouble in the third inning.  Erwin went two innings and gave up six hits, three runs and three earned runs.

Meyer relieved Erwin in the third and pitched two innings giving up three hits and no runs.

Clemson jumped out to an early lead in the first inning.  Maleek Gibson led off with a double.  Steve Wilkerson grounded out moving Gibson to third.  Steven Duggar singled to right scoring Gibson to put the Tigers up 1-0.

The Tigers threatened again in the top of the second.  McGibbon and Brittle singled with two outs, but Slaton grounded out to end the threat.

Florida State tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second.  In the bottom of the third the Noles scored two more to take the lead 3-1.

It looked like Clemson might have something going in the top of the sixth.  Krieger, McGibbon and Brittle singled to load the bases.  Tyler Slaton watched strike three and Jay Baum hit a fly to short right.  Wilkerson lined out to second to end the threat.

The Noles added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to stretch the lead to 5-1.  Florida State plated another run in the seventh.

Clemson finished the regular season with a 39-17 record overall and 18-12 in the ACC.  The Tigers will play NC State, North Carolina and Georgia Tech next week in the ACC tournament in that order.
