DURHAM — Here is a look at the action on Day One of the ACC Baseball Championships at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park:
Georgia Tech 4, Florida State 3
Down to their last out, the Yellow Jackets got back-to-back homers from first baseman A.J. Murray and shortstop Mott Hyde to steal a 4-3 win over the Seminoles. The late inning drama stole the limelight from what looked like a pitcher’s duel between Georgia Tech starter Buck Farmer (7.0 IP, 3 runs, 6 hits, 8 Ks) and Florida State starter Scott Sitz (6.0 IP, 2 runs, 6 hits, 6 Ks). Yellow Jacket rightfielder Daniel Palka picked up the win in relief while Seminole reliever Robby Coles blew his second save of the season.
Virginia Tech 10, Virginia 1
Hokie shortstop Chad Pinder hit a pair of homers, including a grand slam, as Virginia Tech picked up a somewhat surprising easy win over rival Virginia. The Cavaliers found themselves in a early hole after a six-run second inning by Virginia Tech as starter Brandon Waddell struggled, allowing six runs on 10 hits in 4.0 innings. Pinder finished the game with a career-high six RBI and his 10 total bases were one shy of his career high. The nine run loss was Virginia’s largest margin of defeat this season.
NC State 6, Clemson 3
The Wolfpack used a four-run seventh inning to break open a 2-2 tie to secure a 6-3 win over the Tigers. NC State reliever Josh Easley worked out of bases loaded jam in the sixth and pitched four strong innings while Clemson starter Daniel Gossett allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits in 6.1 innings. Tiger catcher Garrett Boulware led both teams at the plate, going 3-for-4 on the night with a double and a homer.
