DURHAM — Here is a look at the action on Day Two of the ACC Baseball Championships at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park:
Virginia 8, Georgia Tech 2
Virginia bounced back from a day one shocker with an 8-2 defeat of Georgia Tech on Thursday as both teams are still alive in the championship hunt. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Cavaliers came back with back-to-back two run innings in the third and fourth innings. Virginia put the game out of reach with a three-spot in the sixth inning. The Cavaliers hit three homers in the game and Virginia starter Scott Silverstein pitched 8.2 solid innings of 10-hit, 2-run ball to keep the Cavaliers alive in Durham.
North Carolina 10, Miami (FL) 0 (8 innings)
The Tar Heels made their ACC Baseball Championship debut a strong one, pounding out 18 hits and getting a complete game effort on the mound from Kent Emanuel. North Carolina wasted little time in getting things started, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first runs on five hits. That was all the support that Emanuel, who threw his third shutout of the year and fifth complete game of the season, would need as he allowed just four hits in 8.0 innings.
Virginia Tech 3, Florida State 2
The Hokies capped a thrilling ninth inning with a walk-off homer off the bat of Mark Zagunis to upset Florida State 3-2 on Thursday night. Virginia Tech seemed poised for an easier win, taking a 2-0 lead to the ninth, but the Seminoles responded with two runs on three hits to tie the game. Hokie starter Brad Markey was excellent on the mound, allowing two runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts in 8.1 innings. Florida State, who was eliminated from championship contention with the loss, lost on the second straight day to a ninth inning homer.
