There are a lot of unknowns at right tackle

By Will Vandervort.

Robbie Caldwell has been coaching so long he said he does not get anxious anymore even when he has just three guys on the two-deep depth chart at offensive tackle.

The Tigers will enter summer camp with Isaiah Battle starting at left tackle while Joe Gore and Shaq Anthony will battle it out at right tackle. And oh by the way, Anthony is listed as Battle’s backup at left tackle.

It goes without saying; Clemson cannot afford to suffer a serious injury at the tackle positions. But Caldwell says he isn’t worried about that.

“It does not nerve-rack me anymore,” Clemson’s offensive line coach said. “I have been doing it so long that I have seen it all. I have gone through a season with just five (players). I have had to pull a guy over from defense and put him over here.

“You just find a way to get it done. Don’t get me wrong, we have a plan, but I don’t worry about it. I have confidence in every guy that I have.”

Part of the Tigers’ plan is to use Eric Mac Lain, who is listed as the second-team left guard, and starting right guard Kalon Davis has backups at the tackle positions. Both cross trained in the spring at both tackle positions, though Mac Lain went down with a serious foot injury that held him out the last part of spring drills.

According to Caldwell, Mac Lain is close to being back to 100 percent.

“They have been having a good summer. A lot of them have really progressed,” Caldwell said. “You would certainly love for them to stay healthy, especially the experienced guys, and work the young ones in. But if push comes to shove, sometimes you just have to jump in the fire.”

The two that might have to jump in the fire should something happen or Gore and Anthony don’t work out at right tackle are Maverick Morris and Justin Falcinelli. Morris is a 6-foot-4, 300-pound redshirt freshman and Falcinelli is a 6-foot-5, 300-pound true freshman.

“I think we know what we have at right tackle,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said. “I know what we got in Shaq Anthony and Joe Gore. Kalon can play right tackle and Mac Lain can play. We have five guys that can play tackle for us.

“I wish we had (Patrick) DeStefano. I wish we had Gif Timothy back. Both of those guys were big losses for us. DeStefano very well could have been a starter for us, but I’m very pleased with the summer we have had.”

DeStefano suffered a career-ending shoulder injury at the start of last season, while Timothy’s career ended due to several knee injuries he suffered in the previous two seasons. Timothy was a starter for most of the 2012 season and started five games at right tackle last season before injury ended his career.

“We just have to get the guys we have to kind of take that veteran step,” Swinney said. “Shaq Anthony can play. He has played. He has won. Isaiah Battle has won for us. I know what those guys can do. Joe Gore has all the tools and he is committed.

“Joe Gore lacks confidence and experience. He has been hurt so he really has not had the opportunity. But I have great expectations for him. He is going into his junior year and this is the year that light goes off if it is going to go off. So I think we know what we have there and we know that we can win with those guys so I don’t see that as an unknown.”
