GREENSBORO, N.C. — Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston did not disappoint the 100 or so media that gathered around the Seminoles’ press table Sunday afternoon at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.

“An ACC team comes in here with a national championship, ya’ll. Can you give us and the ACC a round of applause,” he said. “Finally, we took it away for the SEC, man. It’s a blessing.”

No one, but Winston and his teammate P.J. Williams clapped of course, but the Heisman Trophy winner made his entrance in grand style as many at the 2014 ACC Football Kickoff expected. When it was announced earlier this month that Winton would join Williams at the annual event, it stunned a good many in the media considering this was Winston’s first public appearance since all the news surrounding the crab leg incident in May.

Most of the question asked to Winston were related but not directly asked about the crab legs or the other off-the-field drama he has brought to the Florida State football program in the last year.

When asked how all of the distractions and the media attention changed him in the last year, Winston said, “It hasn’t changed. I’m probably more in the spotlight, but I still do my daily routine and go out there and grind with my teammates.

“I still go out and have a little fun here and there. We still have our minds set on winning another national championship. That’s the most important thing.”

Winston continued that as a quarterback he is always going to get scrutinized and always get praised because it comes with playing the position. He said he understands the leadership that comes with that and he embraces his leadership responsibilities.

As for what he does off the field and as a guy that is a Heisman Trophy winner and carried his squad to a national championship already, Winston says he has learned a lot and he still has more to learn in that regard.

“It comes with the territory,” he said. “You always have to have a smile on your face. Leadership is not only on the field, it is off the field too. I know I have a lot of you guys looking up to me and I know I have a lot of support from my teammates as well.”
