Clemson’s Fab-4 has shot to make impact

So how much of a shot do the four freshmen wide receivers at Clemson have to play this year?

A pretty good one it seems.

Clemson wide receiver’s coach Jeff Scott says Artavis Scott, Kyrin Priester, Demarre Kitt and Trevion Thompson will have an opportunity to play this fall, but it all depends on how they perform in training camp, which begins Friday at the practice facilities beside the Jervey Athletic Center.

“There is a lot of time in August. That is a long month,” he said. “There are a lot of practices. We get around twenty nine practices so a lot can be determined there. Then obviously injuries and those types of things happen.

“It usually clears itself out a week before the first game.”

In comparison with Thompson, Scott, Priester and Kitt are ahead of the curve a little bit for a couple of reasons. First it helped that they enrolled in school last January and participated in spring drills. It also helped that guys like Charone Peake (knee injury) and Germone Hopper (suspension) missed all or much of spring practice, which allowed the freshmen to take more reps than they normally would have.

“They got a lot of reps and a lot of experience,” Jeff Scott said. “If Charone and GHop would have been there in the spring maybe their reps would have been a little more limited. It will all depend. There are a lot of different factors.”

Artavis Scott comes into camp listed as the second-team receiver behind Adam Humphries on the field side, while Kitt is listed behind Mike Williams at boundary. Priester is second team behind Peake and he will get a shot to move up since Peake will miss the first week of camp due to a knee scope last week.

“We will have to see how they progress in the summer. Everything I have been hearing is positive,” Jeff Scott said. “I expect all three of those guys and even Trevion Thompson—it’s not out of the question for him to have an opportunity to play this year.”

Thompson, who is from Durham, N.C., was rated as a top 20 wide receiver by ESPN coming out of high school. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound receiver caught 57 passes as a senior at Hillside High School for 987 yards and 14 touchdowns. He went on to earn All- State honors and was a Shrine Bowl pick.

Of course Artavis Scott, Priester and Kitt were able to show their skills in the spring, and all three of them made plays in the spring game. Scott made a nice catch-and-run for a big gain that got the fans excited about his potential, especially.

“I would say all four of those freshmen have as good of a shot as anyone else to play this year,” Jeff Scott said.
