Clemson still has an important position opened on its offense even though the season-opener at Georgia is two weeks away.
Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris is still looking for someone to step up and become the vocal leader his offense desperately needs right now. For the third time in camp, the Clemson defense got the best of the offense as it dominated in short-yardage situations and intercepted three passes, including returning two for touchdowns.
Jadar Johnson picked off Cole Stoudt on the scrimmages’ second play and returned it for a touchdown. The offense then was forced with a quick three-and-out following Johnson’s interception.
“It was a slow start and you wish you had a little bit more drive about it,” Morris said following the scrimmage. “I think you are searching for leadership. I think on our side of the ball that is what we are really searching for right now – just a true leader that gets everybody rolling when things are not going well and that is something we are missing.”
Morris admitted that a lot of that is coming from veteran guys without experience, such as Stoudt, running back D.J. Howard, Jordan Leggett and a few others. Howard tried to lift the offense spirits up a little bit when he broke off a 42-yard touchdown run on the third possession of the scrimmage, which included him running over a couple of defenders who were in position to make a play.
Adam Humphries, a veteran who has a lot of experience, also made a nice long catch while going over two defenders to get the football.
“Until those guys get experience and have success, that’s what you are going to deal with right now until someone comes forward,” Morris said. “Adam is obviously a veteran guy with a lot of experience and you want to see more like that.
“Adam is one of the leaders on our football team.”
But is Humphries the kind of guy that will get up in a teammates’ face and challenge him? That’s what Morris says is really missing on the offensive side of the ball.
In year’s past, Morris has had the luxury having guys like Dwayne Allen, Dalton Freeman and Tajh Boyd that were not afraid to get in a teammates face and let them know when they were not carrying their own weight.
“Even from one of those linemen upfront, we have to have someone take on that leadership role,” Morris said. “You hope it is Ryan Norton and some of those guys. Again, we have done some really good things in camp and it has been a long camp, but we will do our best to have them ready to go by Georgia.”
One way to help that it too cut down on the turnovers. For the second straight scrimmage, turnovers were an issue as Stoudt, Watson and Nick Schuessler threw interceptions.
“It was just real lousy decision making in critical situations,” Morris said. “Anytime you have a turnover it is not a good situation. We have to make better decisions.”
Does that mean the Tigers will have that vocal leader by the time they roll into Athens, Ga.? Who knows? Maybe!
Despite all the negativity coming from Morris about the offense’s performance Saturday, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was very upbeat.
“We’re going to be pretty good on offense, too. Y’all just remember that, all right? Go ahead and write that down,” he said.
But will they find that leader they so desperately need to find.
