5-star WR high on the Tigers

A  Monday afternoon tweet fired up the fan base of the latest school to call itself Wide Receiver U.

For Tyron Johnson (Warren Easton High School in New Orleans), including Clemson in his top 10 on Monday afternoon was a pretty easy choice. After all, Dabo Swinney, Jeff Scott and Chad Morris have sent plenty of wide receivers to the pros, including Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins, both of whom were first-round draft picks.

“They put people in the league, all the receivers they put in the league,” Johnson said, during an interview with TheClemsonInsider.com on Tuesday night.

“They put a lot of receivers in the league besides Sammy.”

Clemson hosted the senior prospect for a visit earlier this spring.

“I got to meet all the coaches and walk around and see the facilities and stuff,” he said.

Johnson added, “It was nice. That was my first time at Clemson. It was nice.”

When asked about a return visit, Johnson said, “I’m not sure yet.

“I’ll probably get back up there.”

Wide receivers coach Jeff Scott serves as Johnson’s primary recruiter to Clemson.

“He talks about how they want me to be a part of the Clemson family. He thinks I could be like Sammy Watkins basically, making plays,” Johnson said.

A five-star, according to Rivals, Johnson also had Florida, Texas Tech, Oregon, Tennessee, LSU, Georgia, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Florida State in his top 10.

“It’s still up in the air,” he said, when asked about other fall visits.

As a junior, he had 1,300 yards receiving with 20 touchdowns.

Scout, 247 and ESPN all rate Johnson as a four-star. Respectively, they rank him as the No. 7, 4 and 2 overall wide receiver in the class of 2015.
