Kurt Fleming, a former professional baseball player in the Atlanta Braves organization, hadn’t played in a football game since his junior
year in high school six years ago. He described himself as a “work in progress.”
His return to the game was impressive initially Saturday as he bulled straight ahead — no frills — 54 yards on eight carries.
The ninth he fumbled and S.C. State safety Dominique Mitchell picked up the ball and raced 35 yards for the score with 4:05 to play to erase a
potential shutout.
“I ruined the shutout,” Fleming said, likening it to a strikeout in the bottom of the ninth inning with the winning run on third base.
“I let the team down.”
