Chazz Surratt fancies himself a quarterback. So do three of the four major recruiting websites.
Scout, Rivals and 247 classify Surratt as a quarterback. ESPN thinks he’s an athlete.
Clemson, for the moment, falls in line with the worldwide leader.
“They said they’d like to see how I develop as a quarterback before they make the decision,” Surratt said, during a recent conversation with TheClemsonInsider.
Clemson has extended an offer, so have UNC, Duke, East Carolina, N.C. State and Wake Forest. The instate programs all like him as a quarterback, the position Surratt wants to play at the next level.
“I’ve always been a leader on my teams,” he said. “I’ve always had an alpha personality. I’ve always played quarterback growing up, so I don’t see myself playing anything else.”
Surratt’s most recent trip to Tigertown was during the spring, to watch practice.
“It was exciting. They have a lot of really good players, so it was impressive,” he said, “And I liked how fast paced the practice was.”
Last fall, he visited for the Florida State game.
“It’s a really nice. It’s a big football school, so I like that about it. The coaches are great there. It’s really a solid a program,” Surratt said.
A summer injury limited his summer camp circuit stops.
“I was supposed to go down to Auburn,” he said, “But knee was messed up a little bit…so that kind of messed me up this summer. But I went to Carolina, Tennessee, N.C. State. That’s, really, the only three I visited this summer.”
His recruiter of record at Clemson, Dan Brooks, invited wanted him to stop by while school was out.
“I know they wanted me to come down during the summer, but I never got a chance to go down there…(Brooks) tells me to keep in touch all the time,” Surratt said.
With a senior quarterback ahead of him during his freshman year, Surratt played a number of other positions, including wide receiver, running back, outside linebacker and safety.
As a sophomore, Surratt threw for 1,925 yards with 20 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for 1,282 yards and nine touchdowns.
After three games this season, Surratt has completed 62 of 87 passes (62 percent) for 701 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
