Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher says they have addressed the comments quarterback Jameis Winston made on Tuesday when he stood up on a table in the Florida State Student Union and yelled out profanities that could be viewed as offensive remarks towards women.
“Everything has been addressed and we are getting ready for the game,” Fisher said during his weekly teleconference call with the ACC media.
Florida State announced early Wednesday afternoon that Winston will be suspended for the first half of Saturday’s 8 p.m. game with No. 22 Clemson.
“You don’t ever want any kind of instances, but we have to keep learning and educating. We have to make better decisions,” Fisher said. “We have to make smart and good decisions on things and we will continue to do that.”
Winston’s bad and ridiculous actions on Tuesday are more in a long list of issues surrounding Fisher’s Heisman Trophy winning quarterback. In the spring Winston was charged with stealing crab legs at Tallahassee Publix and this time last year he was accused of sexual assault on a female student. He has also had a couple mischief moments as well involving a BB gun and stealing from a fountain drink.
As part of the football program, Winston has never been suspend by the team or missed playing time for any of those incidents. He was suspended for two games back in the spring for the crab leg incident.
Fisher says what Winston did is not something the school and the program do not want or are indicative of, and it was not a good decision.
“It was something that has to be addressed,” he said.
Fisher hopes this is not only a situation Winston will learn from, but the rest of his players will also take notice.
“You can’t make certain statements that are derogatory or inflammatory in any way towards person, race, gender of any shape or thing,” Fisher continued. “Statements that you make are always going to be made more public than what other individuals make and that is the nature of the business or who you are and what you are.
“That’s the situation it is and you have to understand that. If you are amongst a bunch of people that do things, it does not matter. You have to be very intelligent about those things because what you say matters.”
And that’s something Winston obviously has not learned.
