Winston apologizes: “Not a me person”

By Ed McGranahan.

Jameis Winston apologized to the school, coaches and his teammates.

“I’m not a me person,” he said during a press conference today. “That was a selfish act.”

Florida State then said all further questions must be about football, but Winston continued to gravitate back to the immediate issue. At one
point the sports information spokesman threatened to end the press conference prematurely.

Winston said he wanted to still “put this team in the best place to win.”

“I messed up,” he said. “I’ve got to accept the fact I did that. It eats me alive.”

Later he said, “I have to tone it down.” Then he added, “What I did yesterday that was a selfish act.”

Winston was complimentary of Clemson saying, “they’re a good team again.”

“We’re going to go out there and we’re going to do what we’re going to do,” he said.
“We’re going to overcome adversity.

“That’s going to eat me up because I want to be out there on the field.”

Winston said he intended to spend a great deal of time preparing backup Sean Maguire for the game.

“If we play Florida State football we have a good chance of winning this game,” he said. “Sean is going to do great.”

Later he said, “It’s not about Sean. It’s about Florida State,” he said. “One person can’t change the outcome.”

Told some players were incensed by the Twitter post last spring when Florida State was playing a baseball series at Clemson, Winston said
they were blowing it out or proportion.

“That was me having fun with my baseball teammates.”

He said the next day he ate with Chad Kelly.
