Countdown to Kickoff: UNC at Clemson

By Will Vandervort.

Here is an inside look at the Clemson-North Carolina series as the Clemson Tigers host the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday at Death Valley. The game will be televised by ESPNU at 7 p.m.

About the North Carolina Tar Heels: North Carolina is still smarting from its stunning 70-41 loss to East Carolina last week. The 70 points were the most points allowed by a North Carolina team in history and the most by a Power 5 Conference team vs. a non-Power 5 Conference team.

The UNC offense: North Carolina’s issues have not come on offense so far in this young season, the Tar Heels have been pretty good on offense as they ranked second in the ACC in scoring. Led by quarterback Marquise Williams, the UNC offense is averaging 42.7 and 425 yards per game. So far this year the junior has completed 53 of 83 passes for 551 yards and four scores. North Carolina has outstanding receivers, too, led by Mack Hollins, who has a 30.2 yard average on eight catches. He is second in the ACC in yards per catch and is fourth in receiving yards per game at 80.7.

The UNC defense: It has not been good for the Tar Heels. North Carolina ranks last in the ACC in yards (548.0) allowed, passing yards (325.3) allowed and points (42.0) allowed per game. The lone bright spot has been cornerback Brian Walker, who has three interceptions, including one for 100 yards against San Diego State. He also had another late in the game which sealed the victory for the Tar Heels.

Records: Clemson 1-2, 0-1 ACC; North Carolina 2-1, 0-0 ACC

Series record: Florida State leads the series, 19-8

Last year: Clemson leads the series 35-19-1.

First meeting: 1897, UNC won 28-0

Last Meeting: 2011, Clemson won 59-38

Last UNC win: 2010, 21-16

Last UNC win at Clemson: 2001, 38-3

Stat worth noting:  Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson will be making his first career start, the first true freshman to start at quarterback at Clemson since Nealon Greene did it 1994. Coincidently, Greene’s first start came against North Carolina as well. The Tigers won that game, 28-19.

Second stat worth noting: Clemson is 19-3 at Death Valley against ACC foes, including wins in 14 of its last 15.

Third stat worth noting: Clemson leads the country in fewest penalties per game with 2.33. In fact, the Tigers have penalized just seven times in the first three games.

Memorable game: The landmark game of the series took place at North Carolina in 1981. The Tigers won the game 10-8 behind an outstanding defense led by Jeff Davis and Jeff Bryant. It was the first meeting of top 10 ACC teams in the history of the conference, as Clemson was undefeated and ranked second in the nation entering the contest, while the Tar Heels were 7-1 and ranked eighth… Jeff Bryant recovered a North Carolina lateral with a minute left to clinch the victory for the Tigers, a key win in Clemson’s National Championship season.
