Clemson got two big blows on the injury front on Sunday and one is done for the season.
Dabo Swinney announced during his Sunday teleconference with the media that running back Adam Choice is out for the season with a torn ACL, while tight end Jordan Leggett will miss the next several weeks with a torn meniscus and a sprained MCL.
Both players were injured in Saturday’s 17-13 victory at Boston College.
Choice was Clemson’s leading rusher through the first seven games at 218 yards and a touchdown. He went down with his injury in the second quarter while playing the “Wildcat” formation. The Tigers were hoping the freshman could help them in short yardage situations to take pressure off the quarterback position since Deshaun Watson is out with a broken finger for the next three weeks and Cole Stoudt has a left-shoulder injury.
Offensive coordinator Chad Morris said Choice was supposed to be a major part of the game plan at BC.
Choice played a big role in the Tigers’ win over Louisville on Oct. 11 as he rushed for 41 yards on eight carries on their last possession which led to a field goal. He also had a couple of big runs on NC State on Oct. 4.
“That’s a tough loss for us,” Swinney said. “That young man was kind of coming on for us and was kind of hitting his stride. We will let him sit for a week or two and then we will repair his ACL.
“He will obviously be out for the year. That is a big loss for us.”
Choice is the second running back this season to be lost for the year due to injury. Clemson lost Zac Brooks to a broken foot prior to the start of the regular season.
As for Leggett, he could return before or for the South Carolina game. The sophomore tight end injured his right knee in the third quarter on Saturday after catching a pass over the middle. Leggett injured his left knee last season and sprained it again this year at Florida State. He has been playing with a brace the last several weeks.
“We were concerned it might have been an ACL with him, but it wasn’t,” Swinney said. “We will scope him tomorrow so he will be out a few weeks, but we are really fortunate on him.”
Leggett had 10 receptions for 131 yards and a touchdown prior to his injury, including two for 25 yards against the Eagles on Saturday.
Dye’s return may come sooner than expected. With Choice out of the season, Clemson is down to C.J. Davidson, Wayne Gallman and D.J. Howard at running back.
However, there could be one more added to that list. Swinney says redshirt freshman Tyshon Dye could return from his Achilles Heel injury as early as this coming Saturday against Syracuse. Though he said it will depend on how he looks in practice.
Dye got back to workouts in practice two weeks ago and has been wearing a green jersey (limited hitting), but Swinney said the doctors have cleared him for full contact in practice this week so he said the coaches plan to “cut him loose.”
“It is fortunate for us that it has kind of timed up when Tyshon is kind of working his way back,” Swinney said. “He looked good in practice last week. We limited him last week, but he did a lot. He did some inside work, but we kind of limited him.
“This week we are going to cut him loose. He is going to rep obviously, with Adam out now, he will take those reps and that is a positive that we have a guy like him that looks like he is close to being able to play.”
As for Dye playing against Syracuse, Swinney says they have to watch him this week in practice and see how it goes.
“I guess anything is possible when you put a guy back in practice full go, but ask me on Wednesday because I don’t know until I see him go and really get all the work like we are going to put him through on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
“We will see where he is and how he responds.”
Dye traveled with the team on Saturday to Boston College and dressed for the game, too, but he did not play.
The Tigers, who moved up to No. 20 in the Coaches Poll and to No. 21 in the Associated Press Poll on Sunday, will host Syracuse at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Death Valley.
