Giella could add versatility up front

Though Zach Giella is on the Clemson commitment board as an offensive tackle, the three-star senior could find work at multiple positions along the Tigers’ line.

After playing tackle for the first three seasons of high school ball, Giella is playing center for Augusta Christian, and he’s leading the conference in knockdown blocks — he lost count after 50.

“I grew up playing center, from peewee all the way up until eighth grade, so it kind of comes natural to me,” Giella said, during a recent interview with TheClemsonInsider.

“It’s the first position I ever played. I didn’t play tackle until ninth grade. Coming back to it this year…I got back to snapping, so I feel good.

“I’m still working at tackle in practice, so I’m trying to keep my skills up there.”

Clemson offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell saw him play earlier this season.

“He came to watch us play in one game and he said that he was very impressed with me at center. He said I definitely have some versatility in my ability to pull around the edge and get linebackers, so that was pretty cool,” Giella said.

Except for last week’s game against Syracuse, Giella has been to every Clemson home game this season.

“I’m very impressed with how the season is going. I know the defense is lights out, for sure. The quarterback position is a little shaky without Deshaun Watson in there, but I know the offense is doing well and I’m really impressed with everything,” he said. “I love the atmosphere. I love the game day, the tailgating and everything. It’s awesome. It really is awesome. I love it.”

Along with a majority of the other commitments who will enroll early, Giella will take his official visit on the weekend of the Georgia State game. He’ll be back a week later for the South Carolina game.
