As everyone knows, Clemson is on a quest to have the No. 1 ranked defense in the country. That has been one of its goals since way back in the spring when guys like defensive ends Vic Beasley and Corey Crawford, along with middle linebacker Stephone Anthony decided to return to Tigertown for one more year.
And to this point they have not disappointed. The 17th-ranked Tigers currently rank second nationally in total defense, allowing 252 yards a game. There is a good argument Clemson has the best overall unit in college football right now as it ranks in the top 10 in seven different categories, including No. 1 in third down defense (.232) and tackles for loss (10.1 per game).
“That’s all good and I’m proud of our guys, but that only matters in January when it is all said and done,” Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables said.
