One last hurdle to clear

Fork Union Military Academy head coach John Shuman is pleased with the progress he’s seen from Clemson signee Jae’lon Oglesby.

For the last few months, Oglesby has been at the Virginia prep school getting his academics in order so he can join the Clemson football team in January. During a conversation with TheClemsonInsider, Shuman said it appears that Oglesby on track to do just that.

“We’re just waiting for everything to get through the clearinghouse,” Shuman said. “He should be good to go, but I don’t want to say anything too early and have it backfire.

“We feel comfortable and he feels comfortable, his family feels comfortable that everything’s done.”

While the transition to life at military school wasn’t all that easy, Shuman said Oglesby is doing fine.

“Everybody struggles. They think we’re faking that you drill and march around here, wear uniforms. He’s handled it OK. We haven’t had a major problem,” Shuman said. “He’s gotten better. Everybody needs discipline. I think he’s put some discipline in his life. He understands how to say yes sir, no sir, how to take orders now.”

Oglesby has been playing wide receiver this season and Shuman estimated that the former Daniel High School running back has around 15 catches and three touchdowns.

“Good speed, good hands, good route runner,” Shuman said. “He needs to get some size and strength. I think he’ll do that. I think he’ll get in there…I saw their big strength coach on the sideline the other day and I thought, ‘When he gets ahold of Jae’lon, he’s going to blow him up and will be a nice, physical specimen.'”

Exactly which position Oglesby plays when he gets to Clemson remains to be seen.

“Clemson said he could play running back, receiver, DB,” Shuman said. “We figured, to save him from wear and tear, it would be better to put him at receiver, so I think they’ll put him wherever they need him.”

Shuman added, “He’s a natural athlete.”
