Swinney says no one talked to him

The University of Florida is interested in Dabo Swinney to be its new head football coach, but Clemson’s head coach says no one has talked to him to get that type of report.

As The Clemson Insider reported Wednesday afternoon, Swinney is on athletic director Jeremy Foley’s short list at Florida to replace Will Muschamp, who he fired earlier this week as head coach. As expected Swinney played off the notion that Florida contacted him or that he has any interest in the job.

“We are not even going to acknowledge that kind of stuff,” he said. “Ya’ll know I love Clemson, I love my job and I love my players – my assistant coaches. We are trying to finish a great season. That is what we are trying to do – have a great finish.

“We are trying to put together, hopefully, the best recruiting class we have ever had. You know. We will see how it all pans out, but that is where our focus is – great finish, great bowl game, great recruiting class and build Clemson into a College Football Playoff team so we can get to where we want to be. That is our focus.”

When asked did he want his name being associated with the Florida job put to bed because it might hurt his top five recruiting class that is coming in, Swinney said his focus is only about playing Georgia State on Saturday.

“The more you sit around and talk about all that kind of stuff, the more of a distraction it is,” he said. “I love my job. I just signed a long contract because of that. This is a place that is special to me and I have invested a lot here.

“My focus is one-hundred percent winning here and winning at the highest level and recruiting at the highest level. That is it.”

Swinney says he gets TCI’s report as well as other Florida and national media outlets that have linked him as a possible candidate for the Florida job because it came open and people start talking and speculating.

“I get all that,” he said, “but it is the same thing for assistant coaches. There is a time and a place for all of that and this is not the time or place. Right now, it is about trying to have a great finish and us putting this recruiting class together. That is what we are focused on.”

Watson and Beasley update. Swinney said quarterback Deshaun Watson (knee) is doing all his rehab at practice and is running on a treadmill under water. He said right now everything is going okay and things are still day-to-day with him.

As for left guard David Beasley (knee), he is practicing and was wearing a green jersey—which means limited contact, but can participate in drills—at practice today. Swinney says he can play on Saturday and says it would be good for him to play because after last week it would be good for everyone involved to play and play well so they can regain some of their confidence.
