Monday Morning Quarterback

By Will Vandervort.

If you did not understand it before, now you do.

There was a reason why Cole Stoudt kept outperforming Chad Kelly in practice last spring and though some of you out there might not have believed it then I guess you do now. A person’s attitude, especially at quarterback, has a much do about who wins a job as talent and skill.

There is no doubt that Chad Kelly is a better athlete, thrower and runner than Cole Stoudt. I think we all understand that. That’s why, like you, I was puzzled last spring when everything I was hearing from practice was that Stoudt was winning the competition to be Clemson’s new starting quarterback.

But then we all saw Kelly’s meltdown in the spring game and it became obvious this was the issue. We then learned of his blow up with former Miss South Carolina Ali Rogers after a fender-bender accident in a Clemson parking lot. Those actions got him dismissed from the team, but that’s not the reason why he was told to leave.

In talking with a few sources, Kelly regularly blew up on the sidelines. He lost his cool several times in the spring and could easily be shaken and frustrated by defensive coordinator Brent Venables.
