Tigers thin at tight end

ORLANDO, Fla. — Everyone is accounted for and ready to go for the Russell Athletic Bowl on Monday.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said following practice on Wednesday that every player that was expected to travel to Orlando, Fla., for the bowl game is academically cleared to play and all, but one, made it the team-hotel way before Tuesday’s team-meeting at the hotel.

Linebacker Kellen Jones, who was flying in from his home state of Texas, has his flight canceled so he was excused. He did make it to the hotel on Tuesday night, though.

The only player not with the team is tight end Jay Jay McCullough, who is still suspended indefinitely from the team. Swinney said his situation will be reevaluated in January when players return to school.

Clemson tight end Jordan Leggett did not practice at the Orlando Citrus Bowl Stadium, the site of the game.

“It is only Monday in terms of game week preparation. We will see how he is later in the week,” Swinney said. “It has been a position that has been struck by injury all year dating to the season opener at Georgia when Sam Cooper in warm ups. It really has been incredible.

“Everyone has had a turn.”

Cooper returned to play in eight games, five as a starter and is regarded as the Tigers’ best blocking tight end. He was named one of Clemson’s four permanent co-captains for the 2014 season last week. Roderick Byers, who was moved to the tight end position earlier this year, worked on catching the football in practice.

“We are little thin right now and obviously the year has been tough, but injuries are part of the game. It feels like it is the same song at a different time,” Cooper said. “We have been here before and we have always had a good plan so I’m excited.”

If Leggett isn’t able to go against No. 24 Oklahoma then the Tigers will have to play the game with only two tight ends. And if Cooper were to get hurt then they could be in serious trouble.

“In football, if you practice slow that is when you get hurt,” the senior said. “I’m fortunate to be finishing out my senior year so I’m just excited about the game.”

Swinney says he is excited about the future of the tight end position, too.

“We will be very strong at this position down the road. But the injury list has been something out of the ordinary,” he said. “Stanton Seckinger, who has six-career touchdowns and all have come in Clemson wins, is out with a knee injury that required surgery. Jay Jay McCullough has been suspended for the game and D.J. Greenlee suffered a torn ACL earlier in the season.

“We are redshirting two excellent tight ends in Milan Richard (nephew of former Georgia All-American Herschel Walker, and Cannon Smith, son of former Clemson defensive end Bill Smith). We will be very strong at tight end next year.”
