With less than a month before signing day, it would appear that Dabo Swinney has narrowed his focus to two 2015 prospects: four-star cornerback Mark Fields and three-star safety Denzel Johnson.
Fields picked up an offer from Clemson the summer before their junior year. Johnson received his that fall. By the time spring rolled around, Fields was committed to South Carolina and Clemson’s interest in Johnson waned as they filled up the class slots at both wide receiver and defensive back.
The Tigers now look like the team to beat for the two prospects, both of whom will be in Clemson next weekend on official visit.
Johnson had been hearing mostly from FCS programs before he reconnected with Clemson. But that didn’t happen until AC Flora played Daniel in the AAA state playoffs when Swinney was there to watch his oldest son, who plays for Daniel.
“Swinney came to that game and he watched me play,” Johnson said. “The next day my coach texted — Airese Currie texted me — he played at Clemson and he was like, Dabo said that I’m a good player and everything like that. Then, about three days later, Dabo called me and told me everything.”
Swinney and Johnson were in touch again on New Year’s Day.
“He was just like, happy New Year’s and he was just checking up on me,” Johnson said.
Johnson looks forward to next weekend’s official visit.
“I hope everything goes well, so I feel like I can go to Clemson,” he said.
Clemson continues to recruit Johnson as an athlete. He has no preference for one side of the ball over another.
N.C. State head coach Dave Doeren recently invited Johnson to take an official visit the last weekend in January. An offer to play wide receiver is contingent upon the visit.
Towson and South Carolina are also in the mix for Johnson, who took an official visit to Towson in December.
