Clemson coaches to make $4.2 million

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables is one of the highest paid assistant coaches in the country.

On Monday, Clemson’s Athletic Communications Department released to The Clemson Insider that Venables will be making $1.35 million dollars a year as part of his new four-year deal which the school officially announced last Friday.

In all, Clemson will pay its football assistants $4.215 million next season, slightly down from last year’s $4.42 million. Venables is likely to be one of the top 5 highest paid assistant coaches in the country. Reportedly, new Texas A&M defensive coordinator John Chavis will make somewhere between $1.5 million and $1.7 million.

Auburn will reportedly pay former Florida head coach Will Muschamp around $1.5 million or so as its new defensive coordinator.  Last year, Venables made $875,000 in salary and compensation, a raise from the $800,000 he’d earned his first two years at Clemson since coming over from Oklahoma in 2012.

Venables, who contract runs through January 31, 2019, led a Clemson defense this past year that led the nation in total defense at 260.8 yards per game. The Tigers also ranked second in pass defense, third in scoring defense and fifth in rushing defense.

Clemson led the country in tackles for loss and yards per play as well.

But Venables was not the only assistant on Dabo Swinney’s staff to get a raise. New co-offensive coordinators Tony Elliott and Jeff Scott also got significant bumps in pay. Both will make $400,000 next year as Elliott received a raise of $135,000 and Scott’s salary increased $125,000.

Co-defensive coordinator Marion Hobby, who coaches the defensive line, is the second-highest paid coach on the staff. He will be making $415,000 this coming season. Defensive line coach Dan Brooks, along with offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell and tight ends coach Danny Pearman, received a $15,000 increase and will all be making $355,000 in 2015.

Defensive backs coach Mike Reed, who will be starting his third season under Swinney, will make $310,000 this year, while new quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter will make $275,000 in his first year on the Clemson staff.
