Name to know

Brent Venables already knows about Avery Roberts, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound  linebacker out of Concord High School in Wilmington, Delaware.

The sophomore has been invited to Junior Days at Clemson and South Carolina.

“I don’t know yet,” Roberts told TheClemsonInsider, when asked if he’ll be able to make the trip down south.

“We’re still trying to figure it out, me and my family.”

As a sophomore, Roberts had over 120 tackles with 6.5 sacks, 15 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles. On the offensive side of the ball he rushed for close to 500 yards with eight touchdowns.

UMass and Old Dominion have offered.

Along with Clemson and South Carolina, Stanford, Penn State, Wake Forest, Rutgers and UConn are also in contact. Roberts believes Wake Forest and Rutgers could be offering soon.

“My trainer’s been in contact with them for a while, because he knows (Mike Reed) down there,” Roberts said of Clemson. “He showed him my film, they really liked it and he invited me down.”

Roberts added, “I know they’ve been doing really well lately. They’re in the ACC.”

Though Roberts is still learning about the program, Clemson is a little more familiar with Delaware. The state sent former linemen Josh Watson and Giff Timothy down to Tigertown.

“I’d heard about (Watson), he played defensive line. My trainer, my linebacker coach, knows him,” Roberts said.
